Let’s say you buy a used iPhone 14 about six or eight months after it was released.
Whether used or refurbished, it’s a great way to get a discount and still reap the benefits of a flagship phone. To scratch that ‘new’ iPhone itch, many Malaysians are opting for second-hand units. The average user won’t be able to max out the M2 chip or the 1TB storage even on last year’s model. Why would you spend almost RM6,000 on a device (that’s eventually going to depreciate) when your current phone is practically doing the same thing? It’s not like TikTok or Instagram will stop working if you don’t upgrade. iPhone performance has peaked such that the difference between each generation is almost negligible. Aside from being expensive, buyers are no longer finding reasons to upgrade because the specs on recent models are just as good. There are a few possible reasons why people are just not buying into the iPhone hype. It is reportedly selling in lower volumes than the iPhone SE and even the older iPhone 13 Mini. In a report made by Digitimes in October 2022, Apple has decided to cut back orders of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus due to low demand. Granted, Apple has (slightly) more budget-friendly models like the iPhone SE, but many Malaysians are wondering if upgrading to the latest unit is even worth it.
That’s going to be another RM900 on top of the RM5,799 for a 128GB variant. Rumours are spreading that the next-generation iPhone 15 Ultra for 2023 will cost US$200 more than the iPhone 14 Pro Max. There’s no sugar-coating it – iPhones are expensive.
